Cambridge Global Food Security

An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

Global Food Security Cambridge Symposium, Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge

Bookings are now open for the one-day symposium taking place at the Sainsbury Laboratory on Wednesday 8th July 2015. The objective of the day is to learn about and be inspired by case studies of current food security research taking place across the University, and explore ways in which collaboration across disciplines can bring greater impact. Speakers from all Schools of the University will be addressing the challenges of future food provision and access from a wide range of different disciplines and perspectives that are critical to this sustainability challenge. The topics are:

  • The political ecology of a ‘New Green Revolution' in sub-Saharan Africa: emerging trends and research priorities (Ivan Scales, Department of Geography)
  • Integrated multi-scale modelling of water, land and energy resource interactions and their influence on the food system in Uganda (Feriha Mugisha, Department of Engineering)
  • Rural livelihood options for youth from agricultural households (Shailaja Fennell, Centre of Development Studies)
  • UK-India Food Supply Chains: Sustainability and food security (Mukesh Kumar, Institute for Manufacturing)
  • MRSA on dairy farms (Mark Holmes, Department of Veterinary Medicine)
  • Transgenic suppression of avian influenza virus (Jon Lyall, Department of Veterinary Medicine)
  • Translating basic research on insect-plant interactions to aid in the protection of beans in East Africa (John Carr, Department of Plant Sciences)
  • Role of NGOs in bioscience policy making (Ksenia Gerasimova, Centre of Development Studies)
  • Cool Farm Alliance: developing an evidence-based biodiversity metric (Lynn Dicks, Department of Zoology)
  • Business case for investing in nature (Gemma Cranston, Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership)
  • The impact of water availability on food security (Katya Yatskovskaya, Institute for Manufacturing)
  • Forests and trees for food security and nutrition (Chris Sandbrook, Department of Geography/UNEP-WCMC)

As well as these plenary talks, there will be panel-led discussion on how academia can work with our sectors to increase the impact of our research, and a sharing of the vision for the Global Food Security Initiative. Networking time will be given over the provided lunch and refreshment breaks. For further information contact .
