Cambridge Global Food Security

An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

Welcome to the Coffee Break Seminars. This is a relaxed online learning and discussion platform for our food security community. Talks take place every Friday during term time at 2.30 pm, GMT.

The next seminar is on 25 June at 2.30 pm, GMT. Dr Miriam Alvarado and Hannah Ford discuss whether sugar taxes are an effective way of reducing the consumption of fizzy drinks, and make comparisons between Barbados and the UK.

Taxes on sugary beverages are recommended by the World Health Organization as a means for reducing consumption of sugar via beverages. As a result a number of taxes, varying in scope and design, now exist worldwide. Evidence of their effect on beverage prices and formulation have led some to conclude these policies are 'successful' in reducing sugar consumption. Dr Miriam Alvarado and Hannah Forde reflect on their experiences evaluating sugary beverage taxes in Barbados and the UK to explore other mechanisms that may be important for understanding the effects of sugary beverage taxes.
