Abstract:

A new class of drugs are proving to be game changers in the field of obesity therapeutics. Originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, these drugs cause dramatic weight loss in people with overweight or obesity. But how do these drugs cause weight loss? And where do these therapeutics sit in the context of human health? My research focuses on characterizing cell types involved in the control of food intake, and which cells are modulated through administration of these drugs to result in loss of body weight.

Speaker:

Georgie is a final year iCASE PhD student at the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science Metabolic Research Laboratories, co-funded by the BBSRC and Novo Nordisk A/S. Georgie’s research focuses on characterising cell types in the mouse and human brain involved in food intake control, using single nucleus RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics.
