Cambridge Global Food Security

An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

This week's Coffee Break marks World Bee Day.  There will be a short presentation followed by Q&A with Nynke Blomer (PhD candidate, Dept of Zoology, University of Cambridge) and Benny Qihao Shen (PhD candidate, Dept of Archaeology, University of Cambridge) on Sharing Landscapes: Competition between managed honeybees and wild bees.

Coffee Break Seminars are a relaxed online learning and discussion platform for our food security community. Talks take place every Friday during term time at 2pm, UK time.

Please find the event recording here.

Abstract:

In the past years, “Save the Bees” campaigns have led to an increased public interest for bees and beekeeping. At the same time, research is showing potential negative impacts of beekeeping on wild pollinator populations. My research focusses on reconciling these two narratives, through field experiments on competition between honeybees and wild bumblebees, in collaboration with beekeepers. This presentation will introduce this topic through summarising the literature and the gaps that exist.
