Cambridge Global Food Security

An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

A Unique Opportunity to Solve the World’s Sugar Consumption Crisis. Take part in a special three-day Sugar Hack organised by EIT Food in association with the University of Cambridge and Makespace Cambridge on 19-21 July.

Every year, nearly four million people die from blood sugar-related conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure and obesity. Diabetes now affects close to 450 million people round the world, almost double those affected in 1980. In the UK alone, some 18 million people are classed as ‘pre-diabetic’ with an increased chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

Take part and join a consortium of global companies and world class researchers in one of a series of exciting MAKEathons taking place across Europe; the first with the sole aim of solving our sugar crisis and significantly improving people’s future lives.

Are you a postdoc researcher with a creative mind, practical ideas and multi-disciplinary expertise, able to work intensively in a team over the long weekend and, most importantly, ready to take on the challenge?

Makespace Cambridge is providing its 4000 sq. ft. community workshop in the centre of Cambridge and all the tools needed to conceive, design and create a prototype which will enable consumers and businesses to lower sugar consumption. Makespace Cambridge has a wide range of equipment from lathes to laser cutters and 3D printers to support this MAKEathon. All you need to bring is yourself and your input.

Places are limited so please apply early to avoid disappointment. Just 20 applicants will be selected over two rounds. Applicants who are not offered a place in the first round will be automatically considered for a place in the second.

Deadline (Round One): 15th June 2019.

Deadline (Round Two): 1st July 2019.

We are committed to diversity and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Apply HERE.

Sugar Hack 2019 is part of a series of MAKEathons delivered by the MAKEit project under the consortium of EIT Food, partially funded by EIT to hack solutions for simpler and smarter food value chains.
