Preceding the 78th Biennial Conference of the International Law Association (ILA) Conference in Sydney in August 2018, the ILA Committee on Sustainable Resources Management in collaboration with the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law is hosting an expert panel event on the role of international law in sustainable resources management.

The importance of natural resources to global economic growth means that disputes over the control and exploitation of natural resources have become ubiquitous: triggering social unrest, political instability, and armed conflict. At the same time, the exhaustion of natural resources is inherently linked to environmental degradation, poverty and human rights violations. Effective governance and management of natural resources is thus a pressing international concern.

During two interactive and dynamic panels, world-class legal experts from the ILA consider the international legal framework governing natural resources with view towards fostering research collaboration, dissemination and knowledge transfer.
