Cambridge Global Food Security
Will's PhD research is closely linked to food security. He is working to understand the mechanisms by which arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis is established in cereal crops. This has great potential to be utilised in agricultural development, by providing an affordable and sustainable fertiliser alternative.
In September 2017 he will be undertaking an internship at the BecA-ILRI hub in Nairobi, Kenya, working on the Brachiaria project, which is working to introduce this climate-smart feedstock to cattle farmers in east Africa. Ultimately this project may have a long-term impact on dairy/ beef farming in east Africa, and thus food security in the region.
