GFS member, Dr David Willer, is one of the authors of a fascinating paper published this month in the journal Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

The paper focusses on research into the representation of food-system associated environmental hazards that threaten societies worldwide.

Dr Willer and his team explored the data gap in the global understanding of the changing prevalence of hazards.  They found that some, such as climate change and water scarcity, receive a disproportionately large amount of coverage, whereas other potentially equally or more serious hazards, such as biodiversity loss or novel invasive species, receive much less attention.

Understanding, mapping and quantifying these biases in research, policy and news, is an important first step in ensuring the most serious hazards that threaten us aren’t ignored until it is too late.
