Opening of Sainsbury Laboratory

The Sainsbury Laboratory in Cambridge was officially opened on 27th April 2011

The Laboratory was formally opened by HM The Queen, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Afterwards, the Opening Symposium included presentations on The Future of Plant Science by the Inaugural Director of the Laboratory, Professor Elliot Meyerowitz, and the Regius Professor of Botany, Professor Sir David Baulcombe. Other speakers included the Directors of Rothamsted Research, the John Innes Centre, the Sainsbury Laboratory at Norwich, and the National Institute of Agricultural Botany.

The Cambridge Laboratory is the newest and largest ever programme commitment by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation in the area of plant science. The building occupies an exceptional site in the Botanic Garden and represents the latest thinking in effective laboratory design. When fully staffed it will house over 120 scientists whose focus will be plant growth and development.
