Charles Read lectures, examines and supervises for the Faculty of History, where he is a postdoctoral fellow, and the Faculty of Economics at Cambridge, where he is an affiliated lecturer.

His research interests include the interaction between food insecurity, famine and financial crises in Britain, Ireland and the British Empire over the past two centuries.

He has two research monographs scheduled for publication in 2022: The Great Famine in Ireland and Britain's Financial Crisis (Oct 2022) and Calming the Storms: the Carry Trade, the Banking School and British Financial Crises since 1825 (Dec 2022).
